POS Printers...

Point of Sale (POS) printers account for the largest volume of sales of all MiniPrinter products. They are used worldwide for receipt printing in a wide range of retail outlets from the small corner shop to the largest Hyper-Markets. Take a walk around the shopping mall and you are likely to see several POS printers in every single store!
They are similar to the portable series of printers and include a printer mechanism and interface electronics in a convenient counter-top casing. Where they differ is their optimisation for fast and reliable printing to minimise the transaction time. Features still include a choice of thermal or impact printer mechanisms but power is normally from a fixed supply, usually from AC Mains via a plug-in power adapter. The use of 24VDC devices ensures the fastest possible printing speeds, strong operation of an autocutter (if fitted) and the provision of an industry standard 24V output to automatically open the cash drawer at the appropriate time (known as Cash Drawer Kick). Interfaces include RS232C or USB serial and Centronics type Parallel via a cable connection. Ethernet and WLAN (wireless) are also now available options.

POS printers are designed to be compact, to take up a minimum footprint on the counter-top but they are also required to house a long paper roll to minimise downtime for maintenance. Common paper widths are 58 and 80mm thermal and 76mm for impact dot matrix. Other formats are available but consumable costs increase rapidly when non-standard roll sizes are specified. Given the usual high volume throughput of these machines, the running costs are significant and therefore the use of the cheapest consumables is very important.
